Emily Coates - Founder

I launched Visit Wild Wales in 2020 as the world struggled through the perils of the pandemic and lockdowns. It was during these strange times that I began to appreciate quite how much the wilds of Wales are a wonderful and treasured resource which should be shared.
I qualified as a British Summer Mountain Leader in 2015 and was trained to be a Winter Mountain Leader in 2018, during the development of my skills to get these qualifications my love of Britain’s wilderness areas was cemented.
My interest in the wilds of the United Kingdom and beyond were triggered as a young adult and my undergraduate degree in geography from Oxford gave me insights into the landscape and our natural environment which I enjoy sharing. With 6 years as a secondary geography teacher under my belt I returned to university to complete a Masters degree at Imperial College, in sustainability with a focus on policy and economics. My dissertation was on rewilding – still a hot topic in the wilderness areas of Britain. This led to a career in the City at PwC. Here my work focused on environmental and social policy and economics.
With this in mind Visit Wild Wales has a strong environmental and ethical conscious. We believe in leaving no trace, in ensuring our activities are low impact, low carbon, and low emission in general. The future of wilderness areas as we know them are under constant threat and we need to consider this carefully and act with sensitivity and with a view to sustainability as we seek to enjoy them.
